Derby - Sponsored roundabouts
Do other people's home towns and cities have sponsors for the road roundabouts? Derby has them all over the place, sponsored by a whole host of different businesses and organisations.
This roundabout is outside the Westfield, where London Road crosses the junction of Bradshaw Way and, the appropriately named, Traffic Street.
As you can see, this particular roundabout is currently sponsored by Identity who are, apparently, a jewellers. It will give you an inkling of how good a shopper I am if I tell you that, even though I've looked up their website and discovered that they have a shop on Level 1 of the North Mall in Westfield, I can't picture it at all!
Still, their sponsorship is obviously working. Let's face it, without it, you would probably never have heard of them!
More significant to me is the wording on the bottom of the sign; First for aerospace. One day, I must mosey along to the Rolls-Royce site and take a few discrete photos through the fence. After all, if Royces were to go bust again, unemployment in the city would rocket!
Yes we have sponsored roundabouts as well : it is a strange development and I suspect that the amount of money they get in from sponsorship is less than the cost of running the programme and making and erecting the sign.
ReplyDeleteWe have some sponsored roundabouts here in Stoke. Can't remember who they are now though - used to be garages, builders and etc. At one point the council started to put standing stones and vegetation into the roundabouts but I've noticed recently they are clearing them and flattening them as it was getting difficult for traffic to see over them.
ReplyDeleteNo, we have nothing quite like that. Out on the highway there are signs saying that a business or club or school has undertaken to keep a certain section free from rubbish, but that's about it.
ReplyDeleteSponsored roundabouts seem to be a jolly good idea. I'm not aware of any where I live.
ReplyDeleteFrom roundabouts to aerospace. I did not know the meaning of "aerospace." It seems to include businesses involved in travel through AIR, and SPACE as well. Not just airplanes, but rockets and missiles too. It is not the same as airspace. I thought it only referred to outer space travel... Nice photos, take care taking photos through fences. You might get your camera stuck! P.S.( I also added to yesterday's comments.)
ReplyDeleteI've seen quite a few sponsored roundabouts in Lincolnshire. I can't remember who sponsors the 4 in Boston, so I'm not sure how effective it is...
ReplyDeleteSo now I'm curious: besides advertising space (yuck!) for sponsors, what benefits do the town or the sponsor or the town residents get? What exactly does "sponsor" mean in this context? I DO understand the the undertaking to keep a section of highway clean of trash, although it seems to me that in the States people have mostly internalized the principle that throwing out trash is not a good thing; it wasn't always so.
ReplyDeleteHi Francisca,
ReplyDeleteAll the sponsor does is maintain the roundabout. Some just keep it tidy; others do rather a good job of designing and planting. In return, they get to show off their name. Nothing more :)
I've seen these. I kinda wish they'd stop. I hate seeing the signs. But you're right. It's probably effective.
