Downhill all the way (except for the steps up to the car) and, after almost 11 miles, I have to say that I was quite pleased.
We wandered down a typical sandy farm track,
and a walled lane
past another weaver's cottage
and this typical northern pathway.
In Derbyshire, this a jitty. Up here in Yorkshire (and Lancashire) it is known as a ginnel.
What would you call it?
Lovely view going downhill! I can imagine enjoying walking down the walled lane. I'd call it an alley way but a pretty alley way! :)
ReplyDeleteI would say alley too. I know they're called jitties in Shropshire.
ReplyDeleteI was trying to remember what we called them when I was a child - I think gennel (with a soft g) rather than ginnel or jitty - anyway I love your photo of it and also the weaver's cottage:)
ReplyDeleteOddly I have a sneaking suspicion that "ginnel" refers to covered alleyways between houses such as might be seen in the middle of a long terrace
ReplyDeleteWhether or not that is right; The photos are brilliant as ever :)
DeleteThere are lots of nice walks in the Todmorden area ... must go and explore some new ones and/or revisit some old ones at some point this year
In Manchester, it seemed that any alleyway was referred to as a ginnel. Maybe it's different on your side of the Pennines.
DeleteWe have been through this before. It is a beautiful little (walk) way.
ReplyDeleteOH! We don't have steps up to our car. We just get in.
Lovely photos.
That walled lane is so beautiful! I do have a thing for rocks. ~ Maureen
ReplyDeleteYep, it's a ginnel. You have got a fine example of a stone weavers house there as well with the weavers windows that would let enough light in to see the loom.
ReplyDeleteI love that walled lane, and I'd call that last picture an alley. Your pictures make me long to go for walks. I'm praying that soon my lungs will heal and I'll be able to. Yesterday I couldn't even walk around the store...had to borrow one of the electric carts...do you have those in your stores? They are for the handicapped and elderly and my doctor said that with my compromised lungs, I shouldn't feel bad for needing one. I do have the handicapped parking sign, too.
ReplyDeleteHow often do you hike? Or do you have years of pictures in backlog that you can pull up for your posts?

I think we'd call it an alley - but I love your local words!
ReplyDeleteReally really pretty.
ReplyDeleteAlley came to mind. More charm here!
