Rydal Water

At three quarters of a mile long, a quarter of a mile wide and 55 feet deep, Rydal Water is one of the Lake District's smallest lakes. It is, however, extremely popular with visitors. In large part, this is due to its connections with William Wordsworth, who lived with his sister Dorothy at Dove Cottage, in nearby Grasmere, between December 1799 and May 1808, the period during which he wrote most of his poetry.

These days, Dove Cottage is open to the public and receives approximately 70,000 visitors each year.

From Dove Cottage, Wordsworth moved to Allen Bank in Grasmere and then to Rydal Mount, where he lived until his death in 1850.
