Where we stopped for coffee

Last weekend, Dad, Ben and I took a trip up to Cumbria for an Open Day at the Uni. We had time to divert through the Lakes on the way up to Penrith and had a couple of coffee stops to break up the journey and enjoy the scenery.

This is from the road between Windermere and the Kirkstone Pass, close to Troutbeck.

The size of the farm buildings give an impression of the scale of the fells and the way they tower over the landscape, bare and imposing.

The road hugs the hillside, winding round, following the contours, often not measuring much more than the width of two vehicles.

A beautiful place to stop!

  1. It is beautiful and on an awesome scale (for England anyway). Looks fairly typical Lakeland weather though!

  2. What wonderful photos - thank you! I studied for my post graduate teaching qualification at Ambleside, and spent my first years of teaching between Penrith and Carlisle. Beautiful to see it again.

  3. Ooh, I've just gone back a bit and seen your Ambleside post - your Ben's house is one that some of my friends lived in , back when it belonged to Charlott Mason College of Education!

  5. I can't see the coffee shop.
    Lovely visit to the fells.
Interesting abbreviations these days," uni" for university; our guide used "Res" all the time for the Indian Reservation. Then there's "Dels" for Red Delicious apples..... and so it goes.

  8. What wonderful views - I love the mist over the hills (or are they mountains?) and the farm in the valley. I'm guessing you were armed with a flask full of hot coffee?:)

  9. Sorry Michael, no coffee shop. Rosie is right; a hot thermos of coffee - proper stuff though, and fairtrade (always :) )

Rosie - I believe the ridge may be the Troutbeck Fells, in which case almost all of the summits are over 2000' and therefore classed as mountains.

Floss - I hope to post more about Ambleside from future visits :)

  10. Some time when you are up here do try and come back through the Dales and down the A1 - then you would literally pass my door and could call in for lunch/tea/coffee. Lovely photos by the way - I do love the Kirkstone Pass.

  12. Some truly magnificent scenes, H! And I love that winding, stonewall lined road! I'd just want to put out an alert for no one else to use it while I was traversing it, since I'd want to take it super slowly and I know there are many impatient and aggressive drivers who'd only be interested in getting from point A to point B as fast as their vehicle would allow with all those sharp curves to negotiate. To me, that's the only real hazard/downer of travelling anywhere...the other drivers can make it so stressful and unpleasant. I'm so glad to know you were able to stop often and take in all those beautiful sights. Having your own coffee along for the added enjoyment is just the cherry on top!
